Bret Hart began his wrestling career working with his father Stu Hart. Many endless days were spent in the basement of his family's Calgary, Alberta home...in misery. A master of submission wrestling himself, Stu taught his boys everything he knew about wrestling. Back in the day Stu ran Stampede Wrestling and that is where Bret got his start.
Eventually Bret outgrew the promotion and moved on to the big time, The World Wrestling Federation. There, Bret started out his career as a singles wrestler who did a lot of jobbing.
Sooner or later though he convinced Vince McMahon to allow him to tag with brother-in-law Jim THE ANVIL Neidhart. The two became THE HART FOUNDATION. As the Foundation, they won several tag team championships together. But once again Bret was destined for more.
At SummerSlam 1990, Bret fought a classic battle with Mr. Perfect to gain his first Intercontinental Title. But despite the classic matches with superstars like The Mountie, and Shawn Michaels, Bret still wanted more.
After losing the IC Title to the British Bulldog in England, Bret took on Ric Flair in his country of Canada and became World Champion!
In addition to winning the title on four more occasions, Bret also was the very first King of the Ring winner, and was a co-winner of the Royal Rumble in 1993.
Bret sat at the top of the WWF until he left. His leaving was not the heralded exit he deserved. At the now infamous Survivor Series in Montreal, Bret was screwed out of his World Title by Vince McMahon. It was a sad development. Vince had stabbed one of his most loyal employees square in the back.
Following the horrible events in Montreal Bret headed to World Championship Wrestling. In the begining he was lost in obscurity. The writers weren't quite intelligent enough on how to use him. He did however win the United States Championship.
It wasn't until Vince Russo, former writer for the WWF took over, that Bret gained some prominence. Bret won the tag team championships with Bill Goldberg, and eventually beat Chris Benoit at WCW Mayhem to earn his first WCW World Title.
Bret was also responsible for reforming the NWO. Things were starting to really get exciting for Bret, until tragedy struck. During one of his championship matches with Goldberg, Bret suffered a serious concussion due to a head kick from Goldberg. The injury was so severe that Bret was forced to relinquish his belt, and eventually retire from the sport all together.
Sadly, that's where we find him now.
During his career, Bret Hart brought joy to many and thrilling matches to many more. He was the constant role model, and a great humanitarian. Unfortunately time caught up with him, and forced him to accept his status as a legend.
While it saddens me to think that many children, including my own, will never witness him putting down his opponent with his SHARPSHOOTER, or thrill to recieve an autographed pair of his shades, I find some solace in knowing that I got to become his friend, and witness one HELL of a career!
Bret Hart truly is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there EVER will be!
